Status of Environmental Contamination in Ghana, the Perspective of a Research Scientist

چکیده
The production and use of chemicals is an important source of economic welfare in Ghana. However, many chemicals also enter the environment and chemical pollution remains a major environmental issue in Ghana. In Ghana, mining and agriculture remain the major contributors to chemical pollution. For mining; mercury, cyanide and arsenic are normally the reported cases of contamination. Studies have revealed high levels of urinary arsenic in Ghana comparable to other arsenic-endemic areas of the world, while arsenic contamination has been reported in groundwater. Mercury has also been reported in human blood, human urine and fish in southwestern Ghana. Generally, agriculture in Ghana, particularly vegetable farming is fraught with misuse and overuse of pesticides. Pests and diseases pose big problems in vegetable production and these have led many farmers to use chemical pesticides even if they have received no training in application techniques. The results on pesticides residue analysis by several authors indicated water pollution, food contamination and accumulation of toxic compounds in human fluids of farmers. Most examples of contamination reported in literature point to isolated cases. Thus, the status of contamination in Ghana as evidenced from a review of literature is localized and not nationwide.

Hydrocarbon contaminated water remediation using a locally constructed multi-stage bioreactor incorporated with media filtration
The present study investigated the coupling effect of biodegradation and media filtration in treating hydrocarbon contaminated water. The study recorded reductions in total petroleum hydrocarbon, total dissolved solids, turbidity and microbial load. The study was essentially a simulated pump and treat process that involved the pumping of hydrocarbon contaminated water for treatment in a locally...

Names as markers of identity are a source of a wide variety of information. This paper explores the names of characters to show the sociocultural factors which influence the choice of names and the effects that the names of these characters have on the roles they play. Using a variety of personal names from Ayi Kwei Armah’s Fragments, Buchi Emecheta’s The Joys of Motherhood, a...
متن کاملAssessment of Nuclear Moisture Density Gauges at a Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory in Ghana during December 2015–December 2017
Introduction: Nuclear moisture density gauges are widely used in construction industry in different countries across the world, including Ghana, on a large scale. Like all irradiating devices, the nuclear gauges should be subjected to radiation safety assessment based on radiation protection and safety principles. Regarding this, the objective of this research was to i...
متن کاملImpact of mining on groundwater quality in SW Ashanti, Ghana: a preliminary study
The focus of this research work is on the determination of the impact of mining on the groundwater quality in the historical mining region of SW Ashanti region in Ghana. This work describes the characteristics of the groundwater chemistry and pollution of the aquifer in the gold-ore bearing formation, which is highly weathered and fractured. The fractures control the permeability and depth of t...

The uncontrolled spread of illegal artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASM), popularly termed “galamsey” in Ghana, has, for decades, impacted adversely upon water bodies, soils, wildlife, human health, and safety. A lack of understanding, however, of the types of galamsey, their operational attributes, and their relative impacts has unfortunately hindered an effective policy response despite num...
